A TIME OF DIVINE REFRESHING

KEY VERSE:

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul…”Psalm 23:2–3a (NKJV)

INTRODUCTION

Could it be that the wilderness you’re walking through is not a punishment—but an invitation to be alone with God? What if the dry place you dread is actually God’s secret chamber of refreshing? In the natural, the desert represents heat, dryness, and weariness. But in God’s Kingdom, even the wilderness holds wells of water for those who dare to look deeper.

MESSAGE

1. Refreshment Flows in Unlikely Places

The psalmist beautifully describes a scene of divine abundance, even in the most unexpected terrains:

“You visit the earth and water it… The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills are clothed with joy…” — Psalm 65:9–13

What a powerful picture! The same God who waters fertile lands also causes the wilderness to bloom. He sends showers that soften the ridges and bring forth new life—even in barren places. The wilderness is not a dead end; it’s a hidden pasture waiting to be nourished by the river of God.

2. Jesus Modeled Desert Retreats

Even Jesus, the Son of God, withdrew to lonely, desert places to rest and commune with the Father. He also encouraged His disciples to do likewise:

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.” – Mark 6:31-32

If the Lord needed such moments of solitude, how much more do we? In seasons of busyness and burnout, the desert becomes a place of divine recalibration—a sacred space for retreat. It’s not just about rest; it’s about restoration.

3. Elijah’s Wilderness Refreshing

When Elijah, the great prophet, found himself depleted and discouraged, he was led into the wilderness where he was revived:

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree… And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.” – 1 Kings 19:4-7

God provided supernatural strength through angelic visitation, food, and rest. Afterward, Elijah received a renewed vision and divine instruction. Sometimes, our most powerful encounters with God happen in the quietness of the desert.

CONCLUSION

The wilderness is not always a punishment—it can be a provision. In God’s hands, the desert becomes an oasis. If you feel exhausted, dry, or distant, perhaps it’s time to “come apart” with Jesus. Step away from the noise and let Him restore your soul. There’s bread on the coals and water by your head. There’s a touch from heaven and a word for your journey. Receive your refreshing today!

PRACTICAL REFLECTION

  • Have you seen the desert as a dead place or as a place of divine encounter?
  • When was the last time you pulled away from the noise to sit quietly with the Lord?
  • What refreshment is God offering you in your current season?

PRAYER POINTS

  1. Father, thank You for meeting me even in the wilderness—refresh my spirit and restore my joy.
  2. Lord Jesus, help me to embrace the stillness and find You in the quiet places.
  3. Holy Spirit, revive every dry place in my heart and renew my strength for the journey ahead.
